Vertical take-off

Lacking space in the veggie patch? Try going up. Create a hanging garden for fresh pickings.

You will need:

Trellising and terracotta pots
Sturdy wire, pot latches, pliers, drill and screws
Paintbrushes
Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic exterior paint in Resene Nero (for trellising)
Resene Enamacryl Metallic paint for pots (we used Resene Blast Grey 3 and Resene Platinum)
Resene Lumbersider satin acrylic exterior paint - undercoat for pots (we used Resene Hillary as a base for Resene Platinum and Resene Friar Grey as a base for Resene Blast Grey 3)

Step one
Apply two or three coats of Resene Lumbersider to trellising. When dry, fix to a wall, leaving space behind for ventilation and access.

Step two
Paint terracotta pots with a base coat of Resene Lumbersider, similar in colour to your chosen metallic topcoat.

Step three
When the base coat has dried, apply two coats of Resene Enamacryl metallic paint. The colour shown here is Resene Blast Grey 3.

Step four
Twist a piece of wire around each pot, leaving enough room at the ends for the wire to be secured to the trellising.

Step five
Using pliers, wrap the ends of the wire tightly around the trellising. Test for strength.

Step six
For bigger, heavier pots, use a specially made potlatch that can be screwed in place. We've used Leyland Latches for our bigger pots.

Step seven
Fill each pot with a lightweight potting mix and some water crystals. The crystals will absorb and retain excess water for extended periods.

Step eight
Pot up each container with herbs, veggies or flowers.
