Sitting pretty

Kill two birds with one stone with this attractive bench seat-cum-screen.

You will need:

Also required: Fence capping (two 1800mm), 14 x 1800mm fence palings (cut 10 of these down to 1250mm), 60mm galvanised nails, four 200mm galvanised bolts with washers, exterior construction glue, skill saw, hammer, drill with 10mm drill bit, belt sander and chisel. One litre Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Rangitoto.

To get the look: the bench is surrounded with a 5mm layer of bark chips. The grape ‘Schuyler’ is part of the Incredible Edibles ranch.

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 how to make a bench screen

Step 1
Set the skill saw blade to a depth of 50mm and cut two lines across the four legs 350mm and 450mm from bottom. Cut a series of close lines across the four legs and remove with a hammer and chisel.

Step 2 how to make a bench screen

Step 2
Nail and glue the front legs to the side beams as shown.

Step 3 how to make a bench screen

Step 3
Nail and glue the side beams to the front legs, then drill a 100mm hole as shown and bolt the front beam to the front legs. Repeat with the back legs and back beam.

Step 4 how to make a bench screen

Step 4
Nail and glue the central support beam. Temporarily position top length of fence capping to ensure the seat is set square and level.

Step 5 how to make a bench screen

Step 5
Nail and glue three fence palings to form the seat. Cut a fourth paling to fit along the back edge.

Step 6 how to make a bench screen

Step 6
Nail and glue the lower length of fence capping along the back of the seat and slide the fence palings into position between the upper and lower lengths of fence capping, ensuring they’re evenly spaced. Fix the top fence capping to the top of the rear legs with glue and nails.

Step 7 how to make a bench screen

Step 7
Smooth any rough edges or surfaces with the belt sander.

Step 8 how to make a bench screen

Step 8
With a large brush, apply two generous coats of Waterborne Woodsman oil stain tinted to Resene Rangitoto. Allow to dry, then plant two vines of the grape ‘Schuyler’ at either end of the bench and attach to the back palings with plastic coated wire.
