Xanthe White makes an engraved copper plaque to add personality to a quiet corner of the garden. The quotation by Vincent Van Gogh reads: “If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere.”

You will need:

As seen in kiwigardener

Step 1 Step one
Choose a garden saying. Use a computer to print it out in big type, creating a template to trace around.

Step 2 Step two
Measure a piece of copper to cover your piece of wood. Cut it to size with a pair of tin snips.

Step 3 Step three
Place the copper sheet on top of an old phonebook and lay the type template on top. Sellotape into place.

Step 4 Step four
Use a pencil to trace over the type template, pressing down hard to leave a strong imprint in the copper sheet.

Step 5 Step five
Remove the paper template to reveal the engraved plaque. It will develop a lovely patina outdoors.

Step 6 Step six
Paint the wooden base and stake with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Black. Leave to dry.

Step 7 Step seven
Use a hammer to nail the painted wooden plaque base and the wooden stake together.

Step 8 Step eight
Use drawing pins to attach the copper sheet to the base. Decorate the stake with a strip of copper.
