Ginney Deavoll artist

Ginney Deavoll

Ginney always had a whole lot of leftover paint, which she used to paint a landscape on canvas for her Dad. It was her first experience of painting on canvas. She really enjoyed it and the landscape is still one of her best. Ginney decided she would carry on with canvases so bought herself a selection of 'artist quality acrylic' paints, but unfortunately found them awful to paint with. They were really thick and didn't glide on as the Resene paints did. Some of the artist paint colours covered better than others and they lost their brightness as they dried not to mention they were expensive.

From then on Ginney has stuck to using Resene. Her technique is to build her paintings up layer by layer using a lot of water, achieving a similar result to a watercolour but still keeping the vibrancy of the colours. She finds the consistency of Resene is always beautiful to paint with, it just glides on smooth and even every time. Her favourite palette of colours is Resene Paua, Resene BlueBark, Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Endeavour, Resene Curious Blue, Resene Christa, Resene Broom, Resene Tangerine, Resene Bright Red, Resene Dark Rum, Resene Bullshot, Resene Rusty Nail and Resene Pompadour.

Ginney has painted around 16 murals in and around Christchurch including the Sumner Surf Club. These days Ginney still paints the odd mural but mainly focuses on gallery work. She had her first exhibition in 2010, which was a great success, boosting her confidence to make painting her career. So now she spends half her time painting and half working as a guide in the outdoors . Ginney's inspiration comes from the natural world and New Zealand in particular. She finds her best work comes when she paints from life and from an experience. She will come up a design to describe an event or place then find the objects she needs (shells, leaves etc) and paint them from life.

The paintings shown here are from her Coastal Journey series. They're based on a six week sea kayak trip up the coast of Northland. They're the picture of the trip, the things they saw, places, and events that made a lasting impression.
