Johnny started painting in 2001 on a film set in Foxton. On the film set he worked with an artist who encouraged him to continue my painting after the film was finished. Ultimately Johnny ended up working on murals, especially those depicting ocean life, including one in The Lombard Parking Building titled "A whale of a time in Wellington".
Today he works mainly with acrylics on canvas, pdf and plywood. Johnny is inspired by nature and its beauty. His nephew Joel de Vries, who also paints, has regenerated his passion in painting.
Johnny's murals are finished in Resene paint with hues mainly from the yellow, blue and red palette.
