Succulent window

It’s easy to create this piece of rustic garden art by upcycling an old wooden window frame.

Make a succulent window for your garden

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 101

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need

  • 50mm x 50mm dressed timber cut to the following lengths:
    • 665mm (x2)
    • 610mm (x2)
  • 75mm exterior screws, decking nails
  • Fence palings cut to the following lengths:
    • 755mm (x4)
  • Galvanised wire netting
  • Galvanised staples
  • Hammer
 

To get the look: Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Sea Mist.

Other ideas: For a rich pink effect paint the front of the frame with Resene Cabaret and the sides with Resene Illusion.

How to make a succulent window

Step 1
Step one
Measure, mark and cut all the pieces of timber to the lengths listed above and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 2
Step two
Measure, mark and cut a piece of galvanised wire netting to fit over the back of the window frame. Fix this into position with galvanised staples.
Step 3
Step three
Attach the pieces of 50mm x 50mm timber to the back of the window frame with decking nails, as shown.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the pieces of fence paling and any areas of bare wood on the window frame.
Step 5
Step five
Turn the window face down and fill the cavity behind with sphagnum moss, as shown.
Step 6
Step six
Fix the pieces of fence paling to the back using 75mm screws.
Step 7
Step seven
Paint the front of the window frame with two coats of Resene Bunting, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the sides with two coats of Resene Hammerhead, allowing two hours for each coat to dry and then fix to a fence or wall with 75mm screws and plant with small succulents.
