Turn a simple cardboard box into a fun checkerboard game table with a little bit of help from Resene.

Resene kids art with Mark Rayner - Project 30

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: 16 large plastic games counters, Masking tape, Paintbrushes, Pencil, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Fizz, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene Testpots in the following colours: Resene Havoc, Resene Resolution Blue, Resene Tree Frog, Ruler, Sandpaper, Scissors, Sturdy cardboard box

Top tip: Large plastic games counters are available from most discount stores or toy shops.

Here's another idea: Use this checkerboard table to create your very own chess game using plastic animal figures.

Step 1
Step one
Neaten up the box by placing masking tape along all the joins, as shown. Use the scissors to cut the tape to size.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry primer to the entire box and leave to dry for about an hour.
Step 3
Step three
Apply two coats of Resene Fizz to the box and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Use the pencil and ruler to divide the top of the box into an even grid of eight squares by eight squares. Paint alternate squares with two coats of Resene Resolution Blue, allowing two hours to dry between coats.
Step 5
Step five
Lightly sand the plastic games counters and apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, as shown. Allow to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Paint eight of the counters with two coats of Resene Havoc, and the remaining counters with two coats of Resene Tree Frog. Once dry, set up the counters as shown and start playing!
