Matisse painting

Create a real impression with this Matisse-inspired masterpiece complete with antique effect gold frame.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 30

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, hammer, old picture frame, paintbrushes (including artists’ brush), primed artists’ canvas board cut to fit the frame, Resene Art Action Metallic testpot in Resene Bullion (x2), Resene Crackle Effect, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Chicago, Resene Havoc, Resene Jacksons Purple, Resene Nero and Resene Turbo, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, sandpaper, small panel pins.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: Create a monochrome masterpiece using Resene Alabaster, Resene Boulder and Resene Nero with a crackle effect frame using Resene Silver Aluminium over Resene Chicago.

Step 1
Step one
Lightly sand the picture frame to provide a ‘key’ and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the picture frame and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 3

Apply two coats of Resene Chicago to the picture frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 4

Apply one coat of Resene Crackle Effect to the picture frame and allow to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Art Action Bullion to the picture frame and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 6

Apply two coats of Resene Jacksons Purple to the primed artists’ canvas board, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Using the artists’ brush, paint the central figure using two coats of Resene Nero, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the surrounding star shapes with two coats of Resene Turbo and the central red spot with two coats of Resene Havoc. Once dry, fit the picture into the frame, fixing with small panel pins and a hammer.
