Painted shell frame

Combine craft shells with a few cool blue Resene colours to create this coastal inspired picture frame.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 39

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Craft shells, plain wooden picture frame, paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), PVA glue, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Charlotte, Resene French Pass, Resene Pelorous and Resene Spray, sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Texas Rose.

Other ideas: Create a fabulous theatrical effect by painting the shell frame with one coat of Resene Porsche followed by two coats of Resene Bullion.

Step 1

Lightly sand the picture frame with sandpaper to provide a ‘key’ to the surface, as shown.
Step 2

Using a generous amount of PVA glue, attach fanshaped shells to the corners and centres of the frame, as shown.
Step 3

Using a generous amount of PVA glue, attach larger shells at regular intervals around the frame, as shown. Allow the glue to dry thoroughly overnight.
Step 4

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the shells and the frame, allowing two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Using an artists’ brush, apply two coats of Resene Pelorous to the frame, as shown. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Spray to the fanshaped shells, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene French Pass to the larger shells along the top and bottom of the frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Charlotte to the larger shells down either sides of the frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
