Dressing table

Give a tired old bedroom dressing table a fresh new look using Resene Enamacryl.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 42

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Old dressing table, paintbrushes (including an artists’ brush), Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel tinted to Resene Alabaster, Resene Dolphin and Resene Spun Pearl, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, sandpaper, screwdriver, spatula or putty knife, unpainted wooden door handles with screws, wood filler.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Pale Rose and the woodwork with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Alabaster.

Other ideas: For a darker monochrome effect paint the dresser with Resene Jaguar, Resene Nero and Resene Trojan.

Step 1

Remove old handles, dresser door and mirror. Fill any holes in the wood with wood filler and allow to dry.

Sand back the wood filler to create a smooth surface and lightly sand the old varnish to provide a ‘key’.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the door, unit and drawer fronts and allow to dry for two hours.
Step 4

Apply two coats of Resene Alabaster to the top, sides and front of the unit and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply two coats of Resene Spun Pearl to the door and drawer fronts, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the door and drawer handles and allow two hours to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Dolphin to the door and drawer handles, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Fix the door and mirror back into position. Attach the door and drawer handles using the screws provided.
