Butterfly collage

Turn a humble wooden frame into a pretty butterfly picture with a little bit of help from Resene.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 56

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Clean cloth, kitchen towel, paintbrush, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Black, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpot of Resene Dark Buff, sandpaper, self-adhesive butterfly wallpaper decals (ours came from ‘Spotlight’), wooden picture frame with MDF backing board.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Persian Red.

Other ideas: For a paler look paint the backing board with Resene Colonial White and the frame with Resene Butter.

Step 1

Remove the backing board from the picture frame.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to one side of the backing board and allow two hours to dry.
Step 3

Lightly sand the picture frame to provide a ‘key’ and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the picture frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5

Apply two coats of Resene Dark Buff to the backing board, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 6

Apply two coats of Resene Black to the picture frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Following manufacturer’s instructions, soak the decals in water for one minute and apply to the backing board. Wipe off excess water with a kitchen towel and allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear to the backing board, allowing two hours for each coat to dry, and then refit the backing board into the frame.
