Painted plate

Create this funky ‘Good Luck’ wall plate using a selection of contrasting Resene colours.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 60

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: Ceramic plate, clean cloth, paintbrushes (including a medium artists’ brush), Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene testpots of Resene Alabaster, Resene All Black and Resene Volcano, sandpaper, self-adhesive plate hanging disc.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chilean Fire.

Other ideas: For a darker effect, paint the words using Resene Alabaster and Resene Tuna over a basecoat of Resene Nero.

Step 1

Lightly sand the plate to ‘key’ the surface and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 2

Following manufacturer’s instructions, affix the plate hanging disc to the back of the plate, as shown.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the plate and allow two hours to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Alabaster to the plate and allow two hours to dry.
Step 5
Step five
Apply a second coat of Resene Alabaster to the plate.
Step 6

Before the second coat has dried, paint the words ‘Good Luck’ across the plate using Resene Volcano, allowing some of the paint to intermix. Splatter the plate with a few drips of Resene Volcano and allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Paint over the words with Resene All Black, allowing some of the underneath colour to show through at the edges. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Aquaclear to the plate, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
