5 ways to bring purple into your home

Don't let convention stand in the way of achieving the bright and quirky home of your dreams. If you're looking for home decorating ideas that are outside the box, why not start with purple? It's one of the most provocative colours and is more versatile than you may think, so find out some unique ways to introduce the hue into your home.

Curtains

Curtains are a great way to update any room, and the right colour and design can really make a splash. Instead of sticking with the tried and true neutral varieties, why not take your window finishings to the next level with a shimmering violet tone?

Resene Designite – Merlot is the perfect option for those who still want a classic design but with an edgy colour. The contemporary deep purple offsets the classic woven jacquard of the fabric, with shiny swirls completing the look. You could let these curtains be the standout feature in an otherwise neutral room, or match the deep purple look with charcoal and earthy tones for a dark and mysterious look.

Kitchens

There's no reason why you should stick to the traditional neutral and stainless steel look in your kitchen. You're bound to spend a lot of time here, so it's important to make it a space that you not only feel at home in, but enjoy aesthetically, too.

Start with something small, like a purple tiled splashback. This will look fantastic against a stark white or slate backdrop, and will add a point of interest to an otherwise subdued room.

For a bigger splash of colour, try a feature wall painted in a shade of lilac or violet. For something really bold, a bright fuschia such as Resene Belladonna will provide the perfect lift to this area, and will no doubt be a talking point for guests.

If you want to take things one step further, turn to your cabinets. Subtle changes like purple door knobs are a great way to introduce small splashes of colour in this room, while cupboard doors in glossy purple shades will make a real statement.

Entranceways

Your entranceway is often the first thing people notice about your home, and yet many of us pay very little attention to the decor of this space. This is one area that will really benefit from a lick of paint, so why not make it a grape hue?

Cover the entire hallway and interior front door in the same shade of purple for a uniform look that will make a splash. Even if the rest of your house is decorated in a minimalist style, this point of difference is a quirky and unique way to show your creativity and highlight this entranceway.

Little touches

If the idea of a purple wall or curtains seems a bit much for you, smaller items can be a tasteful and discreet way to carry the colour into your home.

A unique piece of art, whether it's a painting of a lavender plant or a modernist photo highlighting purple colours, can be hung in any area of the house to brighten up the surroundings and make your space feel more complete.

Cushions and throw rugs can also work, even in the most subdued spaces. Look for deeper, almost burgundy shades or very pale lilacs for a pared-back nod to 2014's colour of the year radiant orchid.

Kids' rooms

Your children's bedrooms are the perfect place to really experiment with purple, as these areas are meant to be fun and creative. Babies' rooms can be painted in pastel shades such as Resene Fog, or leave the walls white and coat wooden rocking chairs and cots in the colour.
