A colour scheme inspired by Van Gogh

If you're looking for some home decorating ideas, have you consider going to an art gallery for inspiration?

We're not saying you should paint a replica of Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' on your living-room wall, although it would probably look stunning if you did.

However, you might find a piece of art that contains a colour scheme that really speaks to you.

You can then use this colour scheme in a unique way in your living room or bedroom design.

Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' is memorable not only for its imaginative brush strokes, but also its striking use of colour. The deep blue of the sky is boldly contrasted with the yellow and white of the moon and stars.

Do you think this combination of colours would look fantastic in one of your rooms?

These hues are quite dark, so they could be used to great effect in a bright, open space. Try picking one shade as a feature colour and using the others to accent and complement it.

For instance, you could use the deep blue as your feature colour, and paint all four walls with this.

Then, you could use a soft, warm yellow for the window frames or borders – or maybe even the ceiling. Add white curtains and you're good to go!

Try different variations of this and see which one you think works best in the space.

You don't have to base your colour scheme on a famous work of art – you might find a lesser-known piece in an art gallery near you. Or, better yet, the art may be in your house already!

If you have a magnificent painting in your home, you might want to pull some colours from it to create a colour scheme.

And, because you (presumably) picked this painting, there's a good chance you’ll love a colour scheme based on it!
