Get decorating inspiration from the movies

Home decorating ideas can be found in many places, so why not think outside the box?

When you're renovating your home this summer, look to your favourite films for inspiration. Here's some of our top picks.

The Devil Wears Prada

Miranda Priestly, played by Meryl Streep, is a magazine editor with an edge in this film, yet her home is decorated with classic, elegant decor. Her timeless living room has French touches and drips with glamour.

Replicate the look by adding a gilded photo frame to your space, or replace your worn-out couches with a plush love seat. Use warm opulent colours like Resene Gold Dust to make this room truly special, either in small doses on candle sticks and around mirrors or on larger pieces. A wooden chair or table would look great in the glitzy shade, especially when accompanied by walls painted in a neutral colour like Resene Double Thorndon Cream.

The Holiday

This movie is great for showing off two vastly different decorating schemes. Amanda's Californian mansion is light, bright and airy, full of the latest mod-cons and high-tech technology. There are lots of sleek lines, and she even has a media room packed full of DVDs.

To emulate Amanda's style, go for a minimalist theme in your home. Keep walls plain and bright in a shade like Resene white and update your technology with the trends. Cleanliness is key, as are big windows to let in lots of natural light.

Iris's home, on the other hand, is a quaint cottage in the English countryside. It's packed with personal touches and looks very lived-in, with cushions, throw rugs, and a roaring fireplace complementing the shabby chic decorating scheme.

If you want to replicate Iris's cosy home, remember that more is more when it comes to decorating. Use warm colours such as beige and dusky pink, and don't be afraid to mix chintzy floral prints. Resene Biscotti and Resene Blanched Pink are perfect tones to achieve this result.

Ghost

The decorations in Molly and Sam's loft are very earthy, with lots of wood used in the huge space. It's got high ceilings, huge windows, Greek columns and a staircase leading up to the mezzanine bedroom.

If you want this effect in your home, think big! The more space you have the better, and make sure you add plenty of wooden touches.
