Keep it simple and calm in the bedroom

Ah, the bedroom. The sanctum sanctorum of the household, where you can go to relax and unwind after a tough day at work or school.

The bedroom is a private space that very few people are permitted to enter – apart from its owner, of course.

However, just because it doesn't get seen by the discerning public on a regular basis, doesn't mean you shouldn't put a lot of thought into your bedroom design as it's one area of your home where you can indulge your colour ideas without feeling it's on show for visitors.

When it comes to choosing paint colours for your bedroom, it's often a good idea to keep it simple.

Remember, you're trying to create a calm, soothing environment – so you probably shouldn't paint the walls with a myriad of bright colours and intricate patterns!  If you want to go bold, consider painting the wall behind the bedhead – that way you’ll see the colour when you come in and out of the room but it won’t keep you awake once you’re in bed.

One of the most popular bedroom colours is blue. According to an article that was published in the Daily Mail, a recent study of this shade has revealed it can lower a person's heart rate and blood pressure.

If you want to, you can add a little bit of interest to the bedroom by using patterned curtains, or a wall decal in a complementary colour, such as purple or green.

Just don't overdo it, and try to keep everything within the same colour palette. You don't want to be kept awake because you are distracted by what's on your walls!

You may also want to experiment with different shades of white, if your bedroom is on the small side. This will instantly brighten it up and make the entire area feel fresh and clean for years to come.

This can also be handy in guest bedrooms as you can then dress up the room with feminine or masculine touches depending on who is coming to visit.

Using such an unobtrusive hue on the walls also gives you the option to play with colour in other areas of your interior design scheme.

For instance, you could pick out a duvet in a rich, vibrant hue – or how about a colourful carpet instead?
