Painting inspiration from famous kid’s movies

Whether you're trying to entertain your children or you're just a big kid yourself, you'll find many great movies targeting the younger demographic. From cartoon lions to teenage wizards, characters great and small are teaching life lessons from the big screen.

To recapture your youth or inspire the whole family, these movies are good for more than just an entertaining few hours. In fact, for the creative at heart, there is plenty of detail and design that can help guide the decor in your home. One particular area of interest is the vibrant and colourful images on the screen.

Here are six exciting illustrative inspirations found in your favourite kids' movies:

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

When thinking about Dorothy crash-landing in the magical realm of Oz, a few colours probably spring straight to mind. The yellow brick road, red ruby slippers and Emerald City are just a small selection of the bright and vivid hues featured in this famous film.

Though sparkling ruby shoes may be out of the question on your budget, you can still capture the spirit of The Wizard of Oz in your home. Try painting with Resene Rocket to represent the slippers, Resene Fizz along the yellow brick road and Resene Dizzy Lizzy to turn the room into your own personal Emerald City.

Finding Nemo (2003)

In the break-out Pixar hit of the early 2000s, a timid orange clownfish sets out on an epic adventure to rescue his kidnapped son. But the bright stripes on the fish are not the only colour inspiration found in this film.

Set along the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, this movie opens on a gorgeous, vibrant and dynamic landscape. Pinks, yellows, blues and greens shimmer in each scene, providing plenty of examples for those wanting a more vivacious interior decorating scheme.

To establish a colourful underwater world in your own home, keep things simple with the big blue. Aqua-inspired shades, such as Resene Float, are a good place to start, and splashes of green like Resene Reef help tie the theme together.

Of course, there is no missing out Nemo himself. Resene Adrenalin is a great option for those striking orange stripes.

The Lion King (1994)

If you've got a budding king (or queen) of the jungle under your roof, The Lion King may well be on repeat on your television. Set on the dusty plains of the Serengeti, this popular Disney musical features some of the most recognisable songs and characters in movie history.

For your little lions, transforming their bedrooms into the desert landscape doesn't need to be difficult with burnt oranges, dusty neutrals and brawny browns all adding to the effect.

Start with a light Resene Sand and pair with Resene Ayers Rock features to truly capture the sun rise over the Serengeti.

Toy Story (1995)

What child hasn't dreamed their toys would one day come to life? Capture your little ones' imagination by transforming their room into a scene directly from the popular Toy Story series.

One of the most iconic images from Toy Story is also fortunately one of the easiest to recreate. Andy, the boy who owns all the toys in this story, has a unique sky-themed wallpaper on the walls of this room.

With a soft blue background and uniform white clouds, this look isn't too hard to introduce into your own home. Pick up some Resene Splat and an accompanying tin of Resene White to get started. Then, simply print a stencil for the iconic cloud shape and get painting! Or go freestyle and sponge a cloud effect.

If you need more decorating ideas, grab out that favourite movie and soak in the inspiration.
