Revamp your home with vintage flair

Vintage styling has been popular in the fashion and interior decorating world for years now, and there seems to be no sign of it slowing down.

Old-school touches in the home can be a nostalgic way to pay tribute to styles from days gone by. A soft, weathered look can be more homely and appealing than sleek, sterile styling.

There are plenty of ways you can add a retro vibe to your home. Have a read of these decorating ideas for inspiration.

Choose your lighting carefully

Installing light fittings and fixtures can be one of the easiest ways to transform a room. Large metal arc floor lamps will give your home a 1970s vibe, whereas smaller Victorian-style lamps will take things further back in time.

Consider new paint textures

Paint products like Resene Crackle can work like magic to transform modern pieces of furniture into shabby chic items. A crackle finish can be achieved by using an acrylic basecoat, such as Resene Lumbersider, before applying a coat of Crackle. A final coat of an acrylic topcoat in a contrasting colour to the basecoat should be applied last.

Resene Crackle will shrink and cause the topcoat to crack, revealing the basecoat's colour in a perfectly imperfect vintage finish. You can play around with the Crackle coat thickness and the paint colours to achieve different results, and the product can be used on small wall areas, furniture, frames and other accessories.

Add some soft furnishings

Soft furnishings such as throw pillows, blankets draped over couches and rugs can add a lot of warmth and personality to a room. Dig out Nana's old crochet pieces and ask your parents if they've got any old items stored away – while they might think things are outdated and unfashionable, they could be the perfect addition to your retro room.
