Wallpaper trends for 2014

From the Resene decorating blog   wallpapers

If you're planning home renovations in the near future, you might want to think ahead and consider the trends forecast for 2014.

Wallpaper trends for 2014

Wallpaper is a great addition to any room, and its increasing popularity means more designs, textures and shades are being developed to suit every taste. If you'd rather keep bold patterns and colours to smaller areas, feature walls are a great way to incorporate wallpaper and are predicted to remain popular into the new year.

There's likely to be a nod to 1950s design in 2014 wallpaper trends, whether it's in gingham accents or cartoonish patterns. Gingham can add a fresh, country-style vibe to any room, and works well with white accents, especially when the gingham is in a pastel hue.

Vintage-style florals remain current, but there may also be more artistic watercolour-type designs featuring on walls in the future. If you do go for a strong floral pattern, it may pay to restrict it to a feature wall as bold prints can overwhelm smaller rooms.

Similarly, if you go for a dark or heavily textured feature wall, you can keep the rest of the room light and clean to avoid cluttering your space.

The ever-popular textured wallpaper will remain popular, as it has been since its emergence in the 1980s. Combine your favourite wallpaper texture in Anaglypta with your favourite Resene paint colour on top. It’s a great way to get the best of both options.

Another trend likely to emerge is the 3D finish. In this type of paper, a drop shadow is used behind designs to create the illusion of prints floating off walls.

In terms of colour, design powerhouse Pantone declared emerald to be the colour of 2013, so it is likely this shade will filter through into home decor in 2014. They have also declared dazzling blue to be the colour of northern hemisphere's spring in 2014, so this colour is likely to pop up in homes too.

You could go for a textured block of colour, or pick up the hues in patterned prints for a subtle take on the trend.
