What’s the best way to accessorise a lounge?

"Beautifully designed objects fulfil our desire for art and poetry," said interior designer Cindy Coleman.

It's true – having a tasteful selection of decorative items can add that final touch to bring an entire room together. But how do you know which ones to choose, and how will these accessories complement your lounge? Well, there's no one single right or wrong answer, but it usually helps to pick items that match the room's current style, interior design and paint colour scheme.

Here, we delve into the best ways to accessorise your living room, sorted style-by-style.

Style 1: Industrial

"One signature element of industrial interior design is the presence of features that people typically try and conceal, such as pipes and ducts," wrote Lucy Call for the design website Decoist.

A simple way to pick industrial accessories for your lounge is not to rummage through home decor stores, but rather, your local hardware store. Pipes, ducts, steel tubing – these classic construction materials can be artfully arranged on your coffee table to create an industrial sculptural centrepiece.

If you're feeling particularly crafty, nail some pipes to your wall and add a wooden plank to form bookshelves. Stack books, chosen in colours of brown or white, above these pipes for an on-trend industrial look in your lounge. You could even stain the wood to a dark hue that will complement the piping, such as Resene Bark

Style 2: Modern minimalism

If you have a modern, minimalist style in your lounge, you're probably thinking 'do I even need accessories?' After all, at the essence of minimalism is the belief that less is truly more.

But the truth is, a few stand-out accessories that have been carefully chosen can do wonders to create a cohesive feel to the space. Aim for an accessory that can hold its own ground, such as a large vase that sits alone in a corner, or a big mirror that hangs by itself at the centre of a wall. If your lounge is a bit small, the mirror can also make it seem bigger, adding to the overall beauty.

Style 3: Rustic chic

In a stark contrast to minimalism, a rustic chic look embraces grouping many items together. Think all things country with an echo of class. Accessories for this style all work as a team to bring the look home, if you excuse the pun.

Collect your jam jars and other mason jar shaped glass vessels from grocery shopping, peel off the labels and give them a thorough wash. Dip them in paint to suit your room, then once dry, pop a scented candle in the bottom of these jars, and tie some twine around the lip. Simple, yet effective, rustic chic accessory. Burlap sacks can also be flattened out to use as table runners.

Finally, don't underestimate how pretty a string of fairy lights or hanging exposed bulbs can be to complete a rustic chic feel in your interior design – string these beauties along a feature wall for a warm glow reminiscent of summer evenings dancing outside a barn.

Style 4: Bohemian beachy vibe

Crystals, crystals, crystals. Nothing screams bohemian louder than placing rose quartz, the love stone, or other gem-like crystals as accessories around your lounge. A true hippie will tell you these have energy, and spread positive vibes around your home. All you need is love, right?

Now, to add to the beachy atmosphere, don't be afraid to take advantage of the basics. We're blessed to often be within walking distance of spectacular beaches, so the next time you visit one, collect sand inside glass vials or thin vases, and find the prettiest seashells. Use these as your lounge accessories so you always have the ocean nearby.
