Wonderful weekend home projects

Once the working week has come to an end, the weekend holds plenty of promise. However, that's not with reference to Friday night work drinks or lazy Sunday brunches – not that these activities aren't fun!

What you can do with your weekend, which you might not get a chance to during the week, is freshen up your home.

Setting a day or two aside to complete some DIY projects can be incredibly rewarding once you've seen the end product. From sprucing up your deck to painting a chest of drawers, there's no shortage of activities that will make your home look that much better, with not a lot of effort required.

From home decorating ideas and beyond, we've got the lowdown.

Freshen that deck

If you've got a timber deck on your property, have you considered when it was last cleaned?

Perhaps your deck isn't grimy, but it's just looking a bit pale and under the weather.

Either way, it might be time to show your deck a bit of love and get it into better condition. You'll need to kick off the process by sweeping any dust, leaves or other debris from it.

Next, mix five parts water and one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer in a bucket, before using it to scrub the deck. Be liberal with how much you use and be sure to get into the grooves (just like that mid-1980s pop hit)!

Leave the solution on the deck for 48 hours before washing it off with a mixture of one part Resene Timber and Deck Wash and three parts water. You'll need to thoroughly scrub the deck with this solution, allowing the area to stay wet for 10 to 15 minutes.

Grab a hose and rinse off the solution then let the deck dry. Tackle this task on a dry, if not sunny day, to ensure the deck can dry properly.

Now that you've eradicated mould, moss and dirt, you might want to think about adding a beautiful lustre to the area. Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain adds a divine colour to wood. Grab a brush and apply two coats, 24 hours apart. Be sure to brush in the direction the grain runs for a smooth finish.

Brighten that bedroom

Have you got a clunky, awkward looking dresser taking up space in a bedroom? Perhaps you've got a storage unit that looks out of place in a living space.

However, for whatever reason, you might find that you can't bear to get rid of the thing, whether for sentimental reasons or otherwise.

If so, consider taking to the piece with a bright shade of paint

A colour like Resene Code Red is a winner, particularly in spaces that have cream or white walls or floors. The luscious pomegranate-inspired shade will add a bold touch to the bedroom, lifting the vibe of the room.

Alternatively, you might select a daring blue shade, such as Resene Hemisphere. Playful and bright, this colour is sure to liven up an otherwise drab-looking chest of drawers or dresser.

To avoid any flecks of paint making their way onto your walls, consider completing this kind of painting project outside. Or, line the space you're going to paint in with tarpaulin and place the dresser in the centre.

You can paint the whole piece of furniture entirely or pick a neutral shade and use your brighter hue to paint the front alone.

If a bright shade appeals but the piece of furniture you've selected has a gorgeous wood grain, don't paint it for the sake of it! Instead, you can sand down individual drawers with medium-grade sandpaper and apply Resene Danska Teak Oil for a look of polished perfection.
