Background to mural creation:
In 2008, Katieke School started planting a nature wilderness behind the school with the goal of bringing back the saddleback bird. The school is called Katieke – kai meaning food and tieke meaning saddleback. The mural depicts the native wilderness giving a home to many birds including the saddleback.
