Mural Masterpieces - Central Normal SchoolAn entry from Central Normal School in the Resene Mural Masterpieces competition 2014

Location:
201 Featherston Street, Palmerston North.

Team:
River Smith, Jennifer Flavell, Danielle Inisi, Paris Taylor, Quinn Cole, Tanika Crookes, Alexandra Robbins, Steve Pretious and Reid Philpott.

Accessible to public:
Yes.

Mural theme:
Cultures within our school.

Background to mural creation:
The school had a very old mural and needed to replace it as it was peeling. The site was very visible from the busy road and the new mural was designed to be ‘about the children, by the children’.

The turtles represented Tonga, the flowers are a nod to children from various Pacific Islands and Polynesian backgrounds and a variety of fish and pukeko portray New Zealand born children. The face of Tangaroa, the Maori god of the sea, was also included to reflect the school’s larger number of Maori pupils.
