Background to mural creation:
The school bought a 6 metre shipping container to use for storage. It is very visible from the driveway leading to the school and was very dull and unattractive. The principal asked Room 7 to create a mural that would be attractive and reflect the community. The students studied the murals that were already around the school and discovered that most were about plants and animals. None of them had people! They surveyed the school community, asking them what was important about Murrays Bay. When they looked at the data they found that Rangitoto Island, the sea, nature, school, sport, friendship and learning meant a lot to most. The students learned how to draw landscapes and to put their ideas together to create one big landscape of Murrays Bay. People were made out of plywood and decorated with patterns that reflect the different cultures in the community. The landscape is painted in bright, block colours and the people are black and white so they stand out.
