Mural Masterpieces - St James’ Catholic School

Team:
Charlotte Bateman (year 6, 10 year old student) – designed and painted it, Bronwyn Bateman – assisted with paint and screwing on the lids, Darryl Edwards – cut out the wooden shapes. Lachie Bateman, Bethany Selwood, Hayley McQuade, Nevaeh Durston assisted with undercoating. A school grandad, Mr Jarrett, made the stickers that make up the bible verse on the large scallop shell.

No – currently inside, but plan is to move to exterior location.

Mural theme:
St James the Fisherman. The school is named after him.

Background to mural creation:
This mural was designed by 10 year old, Year 6 student, Charlotte Bateman. Charlotte’s entry was chosen from over 40 entries in an art competition run at the school aimed at brightening up the school environment and enhance the catholic character of the school. Due to the high number of special needs students at the school, students were asked to incorporate a tactile surface into their mural design.

Charlotte’s mural is covered in close to 3000 plastic lids – all recycled.

Charlotte Bateman won the mural design contest and part of her prize was that she got to create it.
