Painted display stand

Turn an old set of wooden steps into a quirky display stand for ornaments, books or plants.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 21

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: wooden steps, a clean cloth, filler, putty knife or similar for filling, sandpaper, hammer and a paintbrush. Resene Quick Dry and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Putty.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Rice Cake.

Other ideas: For a brilliant dark red effect use Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Pohutukawa.

Step 1
Step one
Hammer in any protruding nailheads.
Step 2
Step two
Fill any overly large holes or cracks in the wood. Allow filler to dry.
Step 3
Step three
Lightly sand any filled areas and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4
Step four
Turn the steps upside down and apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the underside.
Step 5
Step five
Stand the steps the right way up and continue to apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the remainder of the steps. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Turn the steps upside down and apply one coat of Resene Putty to the underside.
Step 7
Step seven
Stand the steps the right way up and continue to apply one coat of Resene Putty to the remainder of the steps. Allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply a second coat of Resene Putty to the steps and allow two hours to dry.
