Shelving unit

Give an old MDF shelving unit a new lease of life by adding a stylish plywood top.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 32

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: 18mm plywood, clamps, damp sponge, old mdf shelving unit, paintbrush, pencil, PVA glue, sandpaper, saw, small pieces of wood or MDF and a tape measure. Resene Aquaclear satin, Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta and Resene Quick Dry.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Eighth Canterbury Clay.

Other ideas: For a darker effect, colour the plywood top with a stain from the Resene Colorwood range before applying the Resene Aquaclear.

Lightly sand the MDF unit.
Step 2

Wipe off any sanding
dust with a lightly damp
sponge.
Step 3

Measure, mark and cut the piece of plywood to form a new top, ensuring a 10mm overhang along the side and front edges.
Step 4

Carefully sand the piece of plywood, running in the direction of the grain, smoothing any rough edges. Wipe off any sanding residue with a lightly damp sponge.

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the MDF unit and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6

Fix the piece of plywood to the top of the unit with PVA glue and hold in position with clamps until the glue has dried. Use small pieces of wood or MDF to protect the plywood, as shown.

Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear satin to the plywood top, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step eight Apply two coats of Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta to the primed MDF, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
