Garden bench

Smarten up an old wooden garden bench with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 38

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 50mm galvanised nails, 1.8m fence palings (x2), Bucket , Garden hose with clean running water, Garden sprayer, Hammer, Paintbrush, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Amulet, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, Resene Quick Dry, Rubber gloves, Stiff-bristled brush, Wooden bench (ours needed the back replaced with fence palings)

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene AquaShield tinted to Resene Pipi.

Other ideas: For a crisp white effect paint the bench with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Double Alabaster.

Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.
Step 2
Step two
Wearing rubber gloves, soak the bench with the solution and leave for 48 hours.
Step 3

Mix one part Resene Paint Prep and Housewash to three parts clean water.
Step 4
Step four
Scrub the bench vigorously with the solution using a stiffbristled brush and then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Allow bench to dry.

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the bench and fence palings and allow two hours to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Apply two coats of Resene Amulet to one side of each fence paling and allow two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
With the painted sides facing to the back, fix the two fence palings to the back of the bench with 50mm nails.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the entire bench with two coats of Resene Amulet, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
