Garage shelving

It’s easy to create this impressive garage shelving using precut fence palings and some Resene know-how.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 40

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 2.4m rough sawn fence palings (x15), 60mm flat head nails, 60mm self embedding screws, Coarse sandpaper, Electric screwdriver, Hammer, Paintbrushes Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Unwind, Resene Quick Dry, Set square, Tape measure, Two offcuts of wood to use as spacers (ours were approximately 280mm wide), Two offcuts of wood to use as top braces (ours were 50mm x 150mm).

To get the look: Mark painted the background garage wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Chalk Dust.

Other ideas: For a strong dark green effect paint the shelves with Resene Karaka.

Step 1
Step one
On a flat surface, assemble a square frame using four of the fence palings, as shown. Fix at each corner with 60mm screws. Use a set square to ensure corners are at right angles.
Step 2
Step two
Fit seven fence palings within the frame to form shelves, as shown. Use the two offcuts of wood as spacers and fix shelves at each end with 60mm screws.
Step 3
Step three
Attach two fence palings at either edge of the back of the shelving unit to act as upright support braces. Fix with flat head nails.
Step 4

In the same way, attach two central support braces, as shown.
Step 5

Carefully stand the shelving unit upright, ensuring it’s flush against the wall.
Step 6

Fix the two top braces into position, as shown, attaching to the garage rafters with 60mm screws. Sand any rough edges with coarse sandpaper.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the shelving unit and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Unwind to the shelving unit allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
