It’s easy to give an old wooden garden bench a new lease of life with a little bit of help from Resene.

Fun with furniture with Mark Rayner - Project 53

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Bucket, garden hose with clean running water, mineral turps, paintbrush, paint stirrer, Resene Moss & Mould Killer, Resene paint pot, Resene Timber and Deck Wash, Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Natural rubber gloves, stiff-bristled brush, wooden bench.

To get the look: Mark painted the background fence with Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Sponge.

Other ideas: For a rich red effect, stain the wooden bench with Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Totem Pole.

Step 1 Step one
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water.
Step 2 Step two
Wearing rubber gloves, saturate and scrub the solution into the wooden bench with a stiff-bristled brush and leave for 48 hours.
Step 3 Step three
Mix one part Resene Timber and Deck Wash to three parts clean water.
Step 4 Step four
Scrub the wooden bench thoroughly with the solution using a stiff-bristled brush.
Step 5 Step five
Rinse well with clean water and allow the wooden bench to dry.
Step 6 Step six
Carefully stir the Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Natural.
Step 7 Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Natural to the wooden bench, brushing in the direction of the grain. Allow 24 hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8 Step eight
Clean the brush in mineral turps.
