Kids bench seat

It’s easy to build this children’s bench seat using timber and two complementary Resene colours.

Build a kids bench seat and paint in bright colours

Difficulty level:  Moderate

You will need

  • 50mm screws
  • Clean cloth
  • Cordless drill
  • Paintbrushes
  • Pencil
  • Piece of timber measuring 600mm x 280mm x 20mm
  • Putty knife
  • PVA glue
  • Resene EzyFill Quick

To get the look: Mark painted the background walls with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Alabaster and Resene Sail.

Other ideas:  For a yellow and purple combination paint the bench with Resene Fizz and Resene Gobstopper.

How to make a kids bench seat

 

Step 1 Step one
Measure, mark and cut the piece of timber to the dimensions listed above. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 2 Step two
Smooth any rough edges on the logs with sandpaper.

Step 3 Step three
Attach the logs to the other piece of timber to form the bench, fixing with PVA glue and 50mm screws. Drill pilot holes first and countersink the screw heads.

Step 4 Step four
Fill the countersunk screw heads with Resene EzyFill Quick and allow to dry.

Step 5 Step five
Sand the filled screw heads with sandpaper and wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.

Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the bench and allow to dry.

Step 7 Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Wham to the bench legs, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.

Step 8 Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Havoc to the bench seat, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
