Give an old cot a new lease of life with this easy makeover project.
Step one: Second-hand cots can be picked up for a song. Check first that the cot is of solid construction and complies with safety standards. Assemble your cot and lightly sand all over, making sure to work over all paintable surfaces. Brush and wipe down and disassemble in preparation for painting.
Step two: Paint all visible surfaces with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel, allowing dry time between the coats.
The Resene website includes a number of simple children’s stencil designs. Download your chosen design at: www.resene. co.nz/kids/kids_stencils.htm. We chose Dreamer. Cut out the stencil using a craft knife.

Step three: Secure the stencil in place using double-sided tape or masking tape. Using your roller or brush, paint the exposed area with Resene Crackle Effect. Allow to dry. Paint over the exposed area using the Resene Bianca testpot, then carefully remove stencil and tidy edges. The crackle paint causes the top coat to shrink and crack, revealing the base coat colour. The degree of crackle effect depends on the thickness of the crackle coat.
To get the look: We painted our cot in the muted deco shade of Resene Kumutoto for a classic look that can easily be adapted to suit either a girl or a boy baby’s room.
