A large house can require a lot of thought when it comes to painting, but it also provides a template on which you can mix and match a number of colours.

The key to decorating success lies in planning. Consider a range of shades, and look at your test areas often during the day in order to pin down the colours that will work best together before starting all that hard, but ultimately satisfying work.

1.This elegant colonial-style weatherboard home sits happily in its neat suburban surroundings. On its roof is Resene Grey Friars, a strong, solid colour that brings to mind the timelessness of old churches and civic buildings. It’s perfectly partnered by Resene Lemon Grass on the fascia board and window surrounds. Resene Joanna enters the picture on the eaves, weatherboards and the ladder. Finally, Resene Bright Red window sills add some colour-pop action.

2.Much-loved Resene Half Tea takes the limelight, starring on the weatherboards in a simple, yet stunning scheme. Teamed with the soft, almost ethereal beauty of Resene Double Alabaster on the fascia board, eaves, windows and sills – and also on the french doors – it makes for a very satisfying effect. The use of dark and dashing grey-brown Resene Gauntlet on the roof is the finishing touch.

3. There’s a touch of the Outback in this rich and fiery scheme, with the elegantly arid Resene Red Planet taking pride of place on the roof, fascia board and ladder. On the weatherboards Resene Drought, a warm, dusty beige, triumphs. The rich creaminess of Resene Half Pearl Lusta on the eaves, windows, sills and french doors is the icing on the cake, neatly toning down the drama, for a home that’s fabulous yet friendly.

4.Reliable Resene Grey Friars appears again on the roof in this scheme but this time as part of a very effective shades-of-grey combo, complemented by Resene Gull Grey, a simple, uncomplicated pastel, on the weatherboards. Resene Quarter Tuna takes its place on the fascia board, window sills and ladder, adding an air of steely resolve, then gentle white Resene Half Barely There arrives to soften any hard edges, appearing on the eaves, the windows and the french doors.
