Bold brights

From Habitat plus - decorating and colour trends 2020

Embrace pops of bold brights.

The best part about this trend is that you’re free to use just about any hue you like, so long as it contrasts with the rest of your space. And, by painting these colours on furniture and accessories instead of the wall, it’s easy to switch it out if your tastes change or you get tired of a certain shade. Oranges like Resene Jailbreak, hot pinks like Resene Smitten and energetic greens like Resene Away We Go are just the ticket for adding a ‘just right’ amount of trendy colour to perk up a dining room or lounge.

Decorating with complementary colours
Decorating with complementary colours can be a challenging look to pull off, but when everything comes together, the results are memorable

A good place to start when picking bold brights is to look to the other side of the colour wheel. Balance a vibrant hue with a dustier version of its complementary colour. When introducing contrasting or complementary colours, remember the rule of three. Try and use the accent colour in three places in the room, such as a feature wall, a vase and a cushion, so it feels part of the room and not an afterthought.

Decorating with complementary colours can be a challenging look to pull off, but when everything comes together, the results are memorable. The key is finding the right tones that work together – instead of competing with one another – and then working in a mix of darker and lighter shades. This wall in Resene Bluetooth and accents in Resene Wishing Well, such as the pendant lamp, the vase, the key dish and the small nesting table, have been complemented with Resene Jailbreak on the hall table and Resene Japonica on the bowl sitting on the coffee table. The floor is painted Resene Alabaster and the large nesting table is in Resene Bluetooth.
