Sailing away

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

A bedroom like this, which carries a strong nautical theme, can be a fun way to bring that love for sailing ashore...

When you’re a kid, your bedroom is special. It’s the only place that belongs to you, where you get to express your personality. As adults, it’s no different – we still have the freedom to do the same and turn the havens of our homes into shrines to ourselves and the things which define us. You’re free to get as creative as you like and adorn your walls with anything that inspires you – and you can use these things as an anchor to create a strong theme.

In a nation surrounded by the ocean, many of us are sea lovers. Chances are you probably know someone who owns a boat, or you may even own one yourself. A bedroom like this, which carries a strong nautical theme, can be a fun way to bring that love for sailing ashore to your home or batch.

This room has strong linear shapes and textures that play off one another, from the wall to the headboard, to the nightstand to the bed-linens. This repetition helps the space to feel more masculine and cohesive. For balance, some curves have been layered on top: namely, the rope wrapped life preserver wreath in Resene Raging Bull, the buoy garland in Resene Raging Bull and the unique coiled rope lamp on the bedside table.

A tongue-and-groove wall behind your bed can be a great way to add visual texture to your bedroom in a way that feels both rustic and refined. Painted in Resene Tangaroa, a rich marine green-blue, the colour helps it stand out further from the adjacent walls in deeper Resene Indian Ink. Together, the two hues create a cocooning haven offset by timber floorboards finished in light and soft Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash.

Paint: Shadowclad wall in Resene Tangaroa, Left wall in Resene Indian Ink, Floor in Resene Colorwood Mid Greywash, Bedside Table in Resene Half Black White, Headboard in Resene Half Black White, Coaster in Resene Indian Ink, Lidded container in Resene Raging Bull, Buoy garland in Resene Raging Bull, Life preserver wreath in Resene Raging Bull.

To keep the wall colours from feeling too heavy or dominating, the slatted headboard and nightstand have both been painted in crisp Resene Half Black White and the majority of the bedding either features white heavily or includes white accents. The brass mirror on the left wall helps in this manner too by reflecting more light around the room.

As a finishing touch, the small lidded container on the nightstand has been painted Resene Raging Bull to play off of the garland and life preserver, creating what designers have come to known as ‘the rule of three’ wherein an accent colour is used in three places within a single space to link the room visually. The coaster has also been painted Resene Indian Ink to help carry that hue off of the side wall and bring it out into the room and carries the eye along to the similar tones in the bedding.

Teaming red, white and navy blue together is about as classic as colour combos come. The trio also has strong ties to nautical history – they don’t call it navy blue for nothing – making it the ideal colour scheme to tie in with the theme of the bedroom. However, other colours that work well with deep sapphires like Resene Tangaroa are a bold orange red like Resene Grenadier, an off-white cream with a hint of green like Resene Cararra, or an olive green like Resene Saratoga. With a blacker blue like Resene Indian Ink, go for a sage like Resene Aspiring, a russet brown like Resene Felix or a steeped beige like Resene Tea.

Accessories: Pier Rope Table Lamp from Freedom Furniture; Provence Bedcover Set in Indigo Stripe from Ezibuy; Stripe Linen Pillowcases, Inku Organic Cotton Pillowcases from Citta; Tasselled cushion, striped throw, mirror and brass shell planter from H&M Home; All other props are stylist’s own.
