Pretty in pink

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

Create a soft pink and grey space where you can prepare for the day ahead in peace.

Instead of cramming yourself into the bathroom to get ready in the morning, create a space where you can take your time and enjoy the process. In this room the classic colour combination of pink Resene Sakura and grey Resene Loblolly come together. These hues are firm friends when it comes to colour pairings and although it was a popular duo with tweens in the early 2000s, it’s been given a modern update with contemporary dusty hues and a contrast of crisp white, such as Resene Mercury on the floor and Resene Snow Drift on the desk.

In another visual twist, Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, a tintable acrylic, has been applied on both the walls to add subtle, elegant texture to the room. On the peach blossom pink of Resene Sakura, Resene FX Paint Effects Medium coloured with Resene Quarter Blanc gives it bright, textural depth, while Resene FX Paint Effects Medium coloured with Resene Half Gull Grey transforms Resene Loblolly in the wardrobe area. When giving Resene FX Paint Effects Medium a go, work on a sample of the wall first to make sure you’re creating the effect you want. Remember, if your first efforts don’t go exactly as planned, they can be hidden by repainting with the basecoat and then restarting the effect. If you’re using Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, allow time for the coats to dry in between each layer.

Top tip

When using Resene FX Paint Effects Medium, be sure to mask off wall sockets, skirting boards and door and window frames – that way you can continue your textural elements to the very edge. Work from one edge of your surface to another for best results.

It’s a well-known fact that soft pink light is highly flattering. Therefore, it’s not so surprising that it makes a great colour choice for a modern boudoir. Resene Sakura, along with the warm glow of the table lamp, is the perfect hue to be doing your make-up in front of. Similarly, grey is a great colour for wardrobes – particularly open-wardrobes – because it partners well with all hues. The gentle nature of Resene Loblolly is the perfect base for clothing to sit against and helps to define the area as separate from the rest of the room.

Pops of each colour find their way onto the alternate sides of the room. On the Resene Loblolly side, a pink box and soft pink books in colours similar to Resene Princess and Resene Pale Rose are seen on the floating shelf. On the Resene Sakura side, the mirror serves as a nod to the grey sheen of Resene Loblolly. The effect is a unified look that showcases each colour in equal measure.

Top tip

When layering in your colours, bring them in through accessories and smaller items. This will ensure that these extra additions of pink and grey won’t detract from the walls themselves. Instead, they’ll act as complements to them.

Curves and straight lines are both present in this soft, contemporary space – perfectly balanced so one does not dominate the other. On the Resene Sakura side of the room, curved elements, such as the arched mirror and circular table lamp, are paired with the straight-edged desk and art print on the wall. On the Resene Loblolly side, the curve of the clothes rack and the circular vase on the floating shelf are matched by the straight lines of the shelf, books and rug. This play of both shapes brings a contemporary edge to this pink and grey space and creates a gentle sense of movement between the room’s two areas.
