Playful working spaces

From the Resene colour inspiration – latest looks gallery

While sharing is caring, and decorating kids’ spaces can be a lot of fun, choosing the right colours for a room that’s shared by a boy and girl can feel daunting.

If you’re feeling stuck for what to pick, a lively scheme like this can work for any gender thanks to its playful colour palette and creative use of Resene paint.

One of the great things about the base of this scheme, in particular, is the choice of wall and floor colours. Resene Poured Milk was used on the top portion of the walls as well as on the floors and Resene Coast was used for the lower part of the wall to break things up and provide some visual interest. With clean and classic colours like these, it’s easy to imagine this room becoming a future guest bedroom after the kids move out.

But while the kids are still at home, why not make it a joyful space for them to study, read, listen to music and surf the internet? This desk in Resene Influential provides plenty of workspace while the bookcase in Resene Raging Bull offers a place to store books, stationary and prized possessions.

On the walls, we’ve painted three 37cm wide circles (from left to right) in Resene Influential, Resene Shilo and Resene Yes Please where Resene Poured Milk and Resene Coast meet to add a bit of extra colour. We then painted 33cm wide round cork placemats in Resene Raging Bull, Resene Coast and Resene Influential and attached them to the wall with double-sided tape, centred over the wall circles, as a special place where your kids can hang photos of friends, awards and notes to keep themselves inspired and organised.

As a special added feature, we chose Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for the wall. Even though it has a low sheen finish, it doesn’t sacrifice durability, and it works as a chalkboard when your teens need some extra space for planning out their week – or a place to play a quick pick-up game of tic tac toe. To remove the chalk, simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth.
