The Dixon family first purchased their 1950s weatherboard home from the original owner. Six years later they completed a large renovation completely transforming it from a tired but well-loved 1950s house, with a pokey kitchen and very little connection to outside, into the happy family home they have today. The overall design of the interior was a complete labour of love for Alison and allowed her to indulge her inner interior designer/decorator after pouring over countless magazines and Pinterest.
In renovating the home they’ve kept within the original footprint, largely also keeping the same layout, but just opening the whole house up both internally and also in its connection to the outside, while being mindful of retaining the character of the original home. This family loves colour and set about choosing bright, fun colours. They have kept the use of them restrained to allow all their treasured artwork, furniture, furnishings and keepsakes to take centre stage.
The treasured possessions form an eclectic mix of new and vintage, store bought and handmade, designer and op shop, local and overseas so a base of white was always planned for the walls to help keep a sense of calm and avoid it all becoming too chaotic. They selected Resene Sea Fog as the perfect white to work with the American oak flooring and cabinetry, Tundra grey marble bench-top and grey aluminium joinery plus it was the best base for the artworks and furniture to pop. To enhance textural interest in the open plan living area soft grey Resene Eighth Friar Grey was painted onto the brickwork on the fireplace.
From this neutral base they injected colour into the bedrooms and entranceway by painting each of the bedroom doors, as well as the front door, a different colour. The master bedroom door is painted in Resene Cornflower, the girls' shared bedroom door is painted in Resene Dali, and their son’s bedroom door is painted in Resene Nocturnal. The entrance door needed to be in a colour that made a big statement. They chose Resene Bingo which is perfect against the stunning Moroccan-inspired black and white tiles, which flow from inside to out in the entranceway. They also created a feature of an under stair alcove in the girls' shared bedroom by painting it in Resene Nocturnal.
The home exterior is painted in Resene White Pointer for the weatherboards and Resene Bokara Grey CoolColour for the fence. Using these neutral colours allows the newly landscaped garden to really stand out.
Thanks to the Dixon family.
