Tackling it one piece at a time

Painting outside of hours

When the Schick family purchased their home three years ago they were well aware that painting the exterior was going to be needed in the near future. The colour scheme and paint condition was tired and dated.

They always thought they’d get professionals in to do the job because of the size of the house. However when the quotes came back the job was going to cost a lot more than they had anticipated. They were a little apprehensive about undertaking such a task and had never seriously considered doing the job ourselves so presenting this to Resene staff at their local Resene ColorShop, they were fully expecting them to say “are you two completely crazy?”

There they stood at Resene Whakatane telling them that they were two complete greenies who had never painted a house exterior before and now they want to paint a 290sqm split level Cedar and block home.

They had a vague idea of the colours they wanted to use - dark weatherboards with the blockwork in a lighter shade. With two weeks off over the Christmas break, this was the only opportunity to get the job done.

After talking with the Resene team, they were told that some of the aspects of the project were not ideal but by no means impossible. As the planned colour scheme was quite dark and could affect the cedar, they were advised to use a Resene CoolColour paint and/or choose colours with a lower LRV (light reflectance value).

Cliff and Ashley chose to go for the lower LRV colours using a colour scheme that was fresh, yet subtle, and that didn’t created too much darkness in the front entrance way under the carport. It also had to work well with the surroundings.

Both love the finish of the Resene Sonyx 101 semi-gloss waterborne paint and the combination of the Resene Triple Sea Fog on the weatherboards, Resene Delta for the blockwork and Resene Gumsmoke for the fascias and downpipes.

Even the fact that we wanted to undertake this job in the height of summer was no problem. So many people said “you can’t paint your house in the middle of summer”. But Cliff and Ashley found out that it could be done, thanks to Resene Hot Weather Additive helping to slow the paint drying.

They thought they would need to spend hours sanding back vertical weatherboards. But with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash this wasn’t needed. This removed most of the old chalked and flaking paint, then they spot sanded any bad areas and primed the exposed Cedar where they had removed a pergola with Resene Wood Primer.

The blockwork was treated with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and as it was quite porous in spots it was then primed with Resene Concrete Primer.

So with the stereo pumping, the sun shining and some great advice from Resene staff about dealing with each area individually (so they didn’t become overwhelmed by the enormity of the task ahead) they took it day by day until the house was completed. Both are delighted with the end result and the money they’ve saved has enabled them to proceed with the outside BBQ area and repainting the house interior.

Thanks to the Schick family.
