Standing the test of time

feature of outside windows and roof area

Jane and Pete’s house is a Heritage 2 listed, Art Deco ‘Liner’ house, two storey, stucco, with wooden joinery. They wanted to keep in character with the colour schemes used in the 1930s.

They finished painting the exterior at the end of last summer. The painting took place over four summers due to work commitments and shoulder surgery.

The exterior was waterblasted to remove any loose, flaking paint, which revealed a multitude of cracks. These were all filled with Resene Brushable Crack Filler, normally two coats, then painted with at least two coats of Resene X-200 weathertight membrane in Resene Half Haystack.

All windows that could be removed, were removed - 42 in total. These were stripped back to bare wood with a heat gun, sanded, re-puttied, undercoated with Resene Enamel Undercoat, then topcoated in two coats of Resene Lustacryl in Resene Haystack. In many cases the glazing bars were rotten and were replaced. Any wood that couldn’t be replaced, but was a bit ‘soft’, was treated with Resene Timberlock preserver/conditioner before being undercoated and topcoated.

All windows that remained in place were stripped back and the same process applied. The window sills on the ‘liner’ part of the windows are made of nine individual pieces. The metal nails had rusted over the years and every join was rotten. All rotten wood was removed, the sills treated with Resene Timberlock, filled with two pot epoxy resin, then undercoated. The trim was painted Resene Green Smoke.

All the timber fences in the back yard were painted with Resene Pitch Black wood stain. On the concrete fence and garage walls they used Resene Lumbersider in Resene Half Haystack and on the garage roof Resene Hi-Glo CoolColour Ironsand roof paint.

It had been 20 years since our house had been painted with Resene X-200, so they knew the product stood the test of time.
