No stripes in this teenager’s bedroom

Son Christian turned 13 and it was time for him to move out of his small childhood bedroom and into a larger one that would accommodate his activities and belongings throughout his teenage years. The room had previously been a guest bedroom, however as guest bedrooms go, it had no built-in storage and had become the dumping ground for ‘stuff’, so everything was cleared out for a clean start.

No stripes in this teenager’s bedroom

The room is south facing, so only catches cool daylight with just a peek of sunlight at the very end of summer when the sun sets west and low. The room dimensions are 3400mm wide by 3400mm deep and a stud of 2400mm, a square shaped room. The flooring is polished concrete, however there is no underfloor heating so the room was cold in the winter with condensation every morning on the large single glazed window and sliding door out to the deck. Whatever the plan was, it needed double glazing of the windows and some form of extra flooring.

The challenge was to create a bedroom that had instant warmth, plenty of storage, a study space, a sleeping space and would be a bedroom that Christian would feel relaxed and comfortable in with the one condition, there were to be no stripes in this bedroom. For that to happen Karyn wanted the room to have a ‘cool’ element that Christian would appreciate and allow him to grow through his teenage years.

Feature wall

Two walls are painted in Resene Alabaster, with trims in Resene White. To give balance, artwork has been hung on these walls.

To add a little extra colour to the room the bedside cabinet and cabinet under the electric guitar were designed and painted using 30mm laminated pine, which had three coats of Colorwood Whitewash applied. The timber pattern can still be seen subtly, adding a textural element.

The interior of the cabinets is finished in Resene Super Gloss enamel in Resene Limerick.

The addition of a built-in wardrobe, desk and shelving was also a must do and adds huge value to the bedroom. Placing the wardrobe/desk/shelving all along one wall was a bonus, turning the room into a rectangular shape, making the space easier to plan. Finally placing carpet tiles on the floor, in a neutral grey, has also increased the warmth factor, adding extra texture and grounding the space.
