Capturing the calm

After 12 years on the rental market, this villa needed a significant over haul to bring it back fit for purpose as a family home.

All the heavy work areas in the house needed remedial attention. Kitchen and bathroom spaces were obvious first targets for replacement, but in discussion with the architect, Operation Home Recovery was extended to encompass a new family living area, decking and bathroom. Project funding was finite – prescribed in fact and principally invested in the structural changes to create the new indoor – outdoor living spaces.

The house aspect is north-south, sitting cheek-by-jowl between its two neighbours with an outlook into the garden behind.

Capturing light, warmth and calm were important factors in choosing the right colours, ones that accentuated the features of its colonial architecture and gently tied in the new spaces introduced in the renovation. This consideration was particularly important to the south-facing living areas at the rear of the house that lose the sun early in winter.

The exterior is now finished in Resene Half Delta, Resene Half Gravel, Resene Nero and Resene Rice Cake. The interior features Resene Sidecar and Resene Quarter Albescent White.

Further factors to be accommodated in the visual mix, 30 years of collated family contents arrayed in difficult profusion in a new, down-sized space. While all the big work is completed now and the last of the inside painting has just finished, the internal struggle continues with as yet unplaced furniture fighting for positions in this new space of glowing colours.
