Fun in the hall

Melanie’s family have a large, long hallway that every room in the house comes off, nearly 17 metres in length!

When they moved into their 1990s home the whole house was carpeted in original carpet but the hallway was clearly a main thoroughfare that had been worn well and had seen better days. When they explored options of flooring, they didn’t want to carpet again because of the relentless use of two adults, three kids, two dogs and a cat, and didn’t like the options available had in hard flooring – not to mention the cost. They lifted the carpet and exposed the concrete slab which was in relatively good condition. Melanie started out by painting this white and found that while she loved the way it opened up the hall, it was a nightmare to maintain.

Hallway

Keen to have something that could lift and lighten the space, giving it life as it runs the length of the house, using colour and/or pattern to do this, Melanie hunted for ideas. The family isn’t afraid of colour or pattern and enjoy fun in the décor, and so the concept of mermaid scales came as a pattern design on an otherwise white concrete floor. The scales create a softening with the curves, without the need for perfect circles. Melanie created this on a tight budget by painting a hand drawn pattern. She chose the colours from other colours she had used throughout the house – from wallpapers, soft furnishings and painted walls. The anaglypta wallpaper on one side of the hall is painted in Resene Half Alabaster high gloss and the yellow wall at the end of the hallway is painted Resene Turbo. The geometric painted door used a mix of some of Melanie’s favourite Resene colours, including Resene Kitsch, Resene Quarter Foundry and Resene Turbo. The geometric design on the door was made with a ruler and painter tape. Resene Black and Resene Half Silver Chalice complement the bolder colours well.

Melanie had fun decorating the hallway. Plus it’s fun to have a colorful pattern run through the heart of the home bringing all the rooms together. They are still decorating other rooms and will continue to use the hallway colours throughout. As Melanie says “I’m lucky I have a very patient husband that trusts my crazy ideas.”

Thanks to Melanie.
