Mid-century mood

As Auckland escapees and lovers of mid-century design, a 1965 build on 3 acres ticked all the boxes. The house was largely original structurally and had been redecorated French chic style, not atypical of the region.

The Palairet family have been renovating since, culminating in a just completed extension.

The house was well designed and well built, albeit in the style of the day. They’ve brought the layout into the 21st century by moving the kitchen into where the dining room was and opening this space up to the living room. They happily gained a fourth bedroom in the process. The individual shower room, bathroom and toilet have become a family bathroom with separate toilet and a powder room. They extended off the master bedroom to add a dressing room and en suite. And they’ve redecorated throughout; gone are the green walls, mismatched carpet and pink marble fireplace. In its place is a modern décor with a nod to its sixties roots.

They used Resene White Pointer throughout much of the home. They love its warmth and the hint of grey and taupe is so versatile and complementary, not to mention a great background for art. Visitors always ask what the colour is!

Feature colours are sprinkled throughout the home, for a lively palette that is enjoyable but not overwhelming. Resene San Juan features in the master bedroom with Resene White Pointer. In the ensuite Resene Keppel is teamed with Resene Half Foggy Grey. Resene Half Foggy Grey continues as a neutral into the family bathroom and powder room, teamed with Resene Supernova on the vanity wall in the bathroom and Resene Clementine Orange in the alcove in the powder room. Interior trims and doors throughout are in Resene Alabaster.

Greeting guests is a welcoming front door in Resene Supernova, and the pergola is Resene Element.
