Painted waves, squiggles and blotches

Kids' Corner from Your Home and Garden magazine

Get playful and have some fun with waves, squiggles and curvy blotches

Paint a wavy headboard and a two tone squiggley patterned wall

Paint tip: When using painter’s tape, paint the base colour on before your feature hue to prevent it bleeding through.

Squiggles, waves, curves – whatever you call them – they are hitting their stride and we can’t get enough of them. This playful pattern is a perfect candidate for a kid’s room and its simple, versatile nature means it can be repeated without overwhelming the space.

In this modern child’s room, a jaunty squiggle design has been painted and repeated throughout the space on the headboard, bedside table, side wall, and even as a frame for art.

Paired with this charming design is another very on-trend look; tonal terracotta. Using a palette of Resene Bone, Resene Kalgoorie Sands, Resene Beethoven and Resene Just Right paired with natural materials and pockets for fresh white accents, this squiggly-inspired space becomes a warm and inviting room that will see your child through from toddler to teenager.

Side wall

To create the side wall with a wavy pattern, draw a line across the wall that is 1.6m off the floor. Then, either hand draw the wave pattern above the line or make a cardboard template to use as a stencil. Use a small paintbrush to outline and fill in the waves, then use a roller to apply your Resene colour on the bottom half.

Headboard

To achieve the painted headboard design, measure an area behind the bed that’s 1.2m x 1.4m. Use painter’s tape to outline the sides of the shape – we’ve used a 5cm width, then use the same template you created for the side wall or hand draw a pencil squiggle line. Paint with a small paintbrush, allow to dry, and then remove the painter’s tape.

Bedside table

For a squiggly, liquorice allsorts-inspired bedside table, paint the base in Resene Brown Sugar, allow to dry, then hand paint the squiggle onto the centre using Resene Just Right.

Picture frame

Do you have art prints but no frames? No worries. Simply paint a squiggly frame on the wall with leftover paint or a Resene testpot and hang the prints over top.
