Interiors – from Latitude magazine
With oversize design elements on-trend in wallpaper, how do you use these papers without feeling like your walls are screaming at you?
Resene Wallpaper Collection 34124-3 and 34216-1
1. Test test test
Just like you would test paint with a Resene testpot, so too should you test a wallpaper. Pin up the sample in the room you are planning to use it in and view it during the day and at night to see how the lighting changes how it looks. If you plan to use it on multiple walls, move the sample to each wall to see how it looks.
2. Always check your lighting
If you are going for a dark wallpaper, you may need to increase the artificial lighting in the room, so it doesn’t feel too dark. Or if you are going for a bright or light wallpaper, you may need to reduce the brightness of your lighting.

3. Unifying the look
Large patterns can look like the odd man out if you don’t link them into other parts of your room. One easy way to avoid this is to take inspiration from the colours in the wallpaper design and use these as accents and complementary colours. For example, you might take the bold colours from the design and use them as inspiration for your cushions or flowers. Use more subtle colours from the design to inspire your colour choices for adjacent walls and the ceiling.
4. Patterns
One way to try out large patterned wallpaper, is to use the wallpaper to create an artwork for your wall. You can use the Resene Wallpaper Collection cut length service to buy two to four metres of your wallpaper. Wrap the wallpaper around a canvas or frame. This will give you a chance to try out living with the design to see whether bigger patterns are for you.
5. Consider other elements of the room
Few of us have the luxury of starting with a clean slate. Decide what is staying – carpet and curtains and find a wallpaper design to suit. Choose your paint colour last.
Keep an eye out for future issues where we will be talking to local Resene colour experts Rebecca Long and Brooke Calvert. If you have a paint, colour or wallpaper query, visit your Resene ColorShop for expert advice or book an appointment with a Resene Colour Expert online.
