DIY with Resene, from OHbaby! magazine

Go slick this summer with a fresh lick of paint in a bold primary colour.

Paint a chest of drawers with a bold colour

You will need:

An old chest of drawers, medium grit sandpaper and block, masking tape, measuring tape or ruler , Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat , Resene Lustacryl paint in your choice of colours, paint rollers, sleeves and trays, medium-sized artist brush.

Top tips:

Painting furniture with bold colours We used Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Roadster, Resene Umber White and Resene French Pass.

Method

  1. If your chest of drawers is already painted, it pays to give it a good sand to remove the sheen and form a key for the new paint to bond to.

  2. Using a roller, prime all surfaces with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. Wait for it to dry and then apply a second coat. Use an artist brush to prime the knobs.

  3. Using a clean roller, apply the Resene Lustacryl paints in your chosen design. Wait for the paint to dry and apply another topcoat. Finish the knobs with the artist brush.

  4. Once the unit is dry, you can then paint the triangular feature on the sides. Decide how high you’d like the triangle to go, and use a ruler to make sure the point is half-way across the side of the unit. Use good quality masking tape (we used Sellotape Washi Advance masking tape from a Resene ColorShop) to mask from the point you’ve marked to the drawer’s bottom corners. Using the artist brush or small roller, paint inside the edges of the tape. Once dry, apply one more topcoat.
