their softer side

From Habitat magazine - issue 28

Three’s The Block NZ winners Andy Murdie and Nate Ross aren’t afraid of a bit of pink.

Andy Murdie and Nate Ross

Tell us about your current ventures.

A: I’m a full-time paid firefighter at Chartwell Fire Station in Hamilton, and I build on my days off for Remnant, which specialises in high-end recycled timber kitchens and furniture. I’m also still renovating our villa.

N: I’m selling my house then moving to Mt Maunganui to start NPR custom build, my new business.

What was your biggest challenge on Three’s The Block NZ?

A: When I get stuck into a project I get tunnel vision, so I found it difficult getting pulled away for interviews or challenges when I was focused on a building related task.

N: Coming to terms with living a separate life to my family and learning to handle the camera crew.

And the highlight?

A: Obviously winning was a highlight, although it was really tough seeing other competitors walk away with next to nothing. I was proud how well we worked together.

N: The number of room reveals we won, which gave us heaps of confidence. Also, meeting all the other teams.

How would you describe your personal styles?

A: I enjoy lots of colour, personality and art. I tend to reuse or recycle products to create interest, and enjoy playing around with different types of textures.

N: My personal style would be colour but not as in-your-face-bright as Andy’s, and lots of natural timbers.

What are your favourite decorating colours, and why?

A: Pink (who doesn’t love pink)! Yellow (team yellow, need I say more). Aqua (don’t really know why but we have it down our hallway and it looks awesome).

N: I love Resene Madison. It’s a great blue and I’ve put Resene Rascal in our main bedroom at home which is a real nice pink colour but not too girly.

Is there a colour you would never use in your own homes?

A: Beige reminds me of grandad’s undies.

N: I have issues with red on walls.

What are your three favourite colours from Resene’s latest The Range fashion colours collection, and why?

A: Resene Drop Dead Gorgeous – I’ve just painted our stairs with it and it looks amazing. Resene Dawn Chorus or Resene Tuft Bush as I’m currently wanting to block paint one of the girl’s rooms in peach and am torn between the two. Resene Discover – I love a soothing blue.

N: I’m liking Resene Duck Egg Blue; that looks real soothing. I also like Resene Woodsman Natural stain on cedar. And I think Resene Zinzan could be the new blue for me.
