Resene has long embraced the colour black, for everything from our uniforms to our stores. We’re not the only kiwis to embrace black, with many using it in their homes and in exterior finishes.
To help celebrate key events, Resene Paint It Black has celebrated the beauty of black and our national pride in a whole host of ways. Here’s a taste of them below.
Orange is the new black — The iconic Ohakune giant carrot that features in tourist photographs all over the world has had a makeover. Last painted in 2004 in the current carrot colour using Resene paint, this time the paint job is black.

Black lobster becomes mainland’s biggest fan — The normally orange world famous giant Kaikoura lobster has had a makeover to become the Mainland’s biggest kiwi rugby fan decked out in black and white.
The Lobster Inn in Kaikoura is home to the world famous giant lobster, over six metres in length and built using steel mesh, paper mache and fibre glass in 1994. The Lobster reached New Zealand Icon status in 1998... more
James the Bull tries on rugby jerseys — When Bulls were looking to get into the rugby spirit, they decided a great place to start was by painting the town icon, James the Bull, with the rugby jerseys of all participating countries. James was already black, which provided the perfect backdrop for painting on the rugby jerseys using Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Kaitoke Green, Resene Tory Blue, Resene Cobalt, Resene Broom, Resene Monza, Resene Flashpoint and Resene Black... more
