against the greige

The existing colour scheme on this 1980s residential apartment building in Chatswood was confusing with too many areas with colours that didn’t seem to consider the architectural form.

The previous scheme had also painted over existing face brick elements, which meant this needed to be incorporated into the new palette.

Despite the colours, the building had great potential.

Many strata committees tend to play it safe. It’s exciting and rewarding when they’re willing to be more adventurous and create something the community can enjoy.

Foregoing the usual ‘three shades of grey’, a warmer look was sought.

Resene X-200 weathertight membrane in Resene Titania was used as the main colour. It helps to delineate spaces and highlight where colour has been used to create focal points of interesting architectural details.

The dusty-pink colour-blocked areas in Resene X-200 tinted to Resene Double Milestone are a fresh contrast with the dark khaki of Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Triple Masala and charcoal Resene Nocturnal. Featured window sills help pull the pink back into the facade.

Resene Triple Masala highlights the building’s entrance, and anchors boundary and garden retaining walls into the surroundings.

The warm and cool colour combination creates a masculine to feminine ‘push-pull’ effect and blurs boundaries. Most satisfying, the new palette lifts this building beyond the grey so it has a clear warm identity of its own.
